SPM Ekonomi has only six chapters: four in Form 4 and two in Form 5. That sounds light, but every chapter is packed with graphs, concepts and calculations.

We took 12 Ekonomi trial papers from 2026 from 12 states and matched every one of the 480 Paper 1 questions to its KSSM subtopic.

With only six chapters, the question isn't "which chapter can I skip". You can't skip any: even the smallest is about 5 questions per paper. The real question is which subtopics inside each chapter matter most.

The short answer

  • Market (F4) is the biggest: 20.4% of questions, about 8 per paper.
  • Macroeconomics (F5) is almost level: 20.2%, also about 8.
  • 3 chapters cover 58%: Market, Macroeconomics, and Economy and Globalisation.
  • Even the smallest chapter is 12.9% (Production, Cost and Revenue), about 5 questions per paper. Don't drop any chapter.
  • Form 4 carries more weight: 63% of questions.

If you don't have much time left

A week left? Market first, then Macroeconomics. Those two are 40% of the paper. Draw every demand and supply graph yourself until you can show a curve shifting without looking at the book.

Three days left? Master the nine "8 in 10" subtopics below. Many are graph or calculation questions in a format that repeats.

The night before? Go over three things: a change in demand versus a change in quantity demanded, the elasticity formula, and the types of unemployment. All three keep turning up as trick questions.

Every chapter, ranked (2026 trial papers)

"Qs/paper" is the average number of questions from that chapter in one 40-question paper.

# Chapter % of Qs Qs/paper
1 F4 Ch. 2 Market 20.4% 8.2
2 F5 Ch. 1 Macroeconomics 20.2% 8.1
3 F5 Ch. 2 Economy and Globalisation 16.9% 6.8
4 F4 Ch. 3 Money, Banks and Individual Income 16.7% 6.7
5 F4 Ch. 1 Introduction to Economics 13.0% 5.2
6 F4 Ch. 4 Production, Cost and Revenue 12.9% 5.1

Six chapters, each worth 5 to 8 questions per paper. In Ekonomi the order you revise in matters less than how well you understand each graph.

Subtopics that turn up in almost every paper

The count below is how many papers (out of every 10) had at least one question from that subtopic.

  • F4 2.1.10 Change in Supply · 8 in 10 papers. A shift of the supply curve (non-price factors: costs, technology, weather) versus a movement along it (the good's own price changing).
  • F5 2.3.1 Malaysia's Trade Composition and Direction · 8 in 10 papers. Malaysia's main exports, imports and trading partners. Usually a table or chart you have to interpret.
  • F4 3.1.3 Functions of Commercial Banks · 8 in 10 papers. Taking deposits, lending and other services. Keep them apart from the central bank's (Bank Negara's) functions.
  • F4 1.1.7 Production Possibility Curve · 8 in 10 papers. Points on the curve (efficient), inside (inefficient), outside (unattainable). Moving along the curve shows opportunity cost.
  • F4 2.1.2 Individual and Market Demand Curves · 8 in 10 papers. The market curve is the horizontal sum of the individual curves at each price.
  • F4 2.2.6 Price Elasticity of Supply · 8 in 10 papers. Es = % change in quantity supplied ÷ % change in price. Es > 1 is elastic, Es < 1 is inelastic.
  • F5 1.2.5 Types of Unemployment · 8 in 10 papers. Frictional, structural, cyclical and seasonal. You usually get a situation and name the type.
  • F4 1.1.3 Factors of Production · 8 in 10 papers. Land, labour, capital and entrepreneur, and their rewards: rent, wages, interest and profit.
  • F4 1.2.2 Economic Systems · 8 in 10 papers. Free market, central planning and mixed economies. Malaysia has a mixed economy.

Mistakes we keep seeing

  1. Change in demand versus change in quantity demanded. The good's own price changes = movement along the curve. Anything else changes = the curve shifts.
  2. The sign of elasticity. Price elasticity of demand is usually negative, but the textbook reports the absolute value. Read how the question is asking.
  3. Opportunity cost. It's the value of the best option given up, not all of them.
  4. Central bank versus commercial bank. Only the central bank issues currency and acts as the government's bank.
  5. Types of unemployment. Losing a job to new technology is structural unemployment, not frictional.

How we counted, and what it can't tell you

The data comes from 12 Ekonomi Paper 1 trial papers from 2026 from 12 states, in Cerdek's question bank: 480 objective questions in all. Each question was matched to a subtopic of the KSSM Form 4 and 5 Ekonomi textbooks. A question touching two subtopics counts as half for each.

The limits:

  • These are trial papers, not real SPM papers. They follow the SPM format, but this isn't a prediction of the questions.
  • Paper 1 (objective) only.
  • Market and Macroeconomics are only 0.2% apart. Treat them as equally important.
